Olive Ridley Sea Turtles

On Wednesday, October 5th, the sea turtle hatchery, located at Casa del Mar on the north end of Sayulita’s main beach, released approximately 280 baby sea turtles from four different nests which have been incubating over the last 50 days. During the summer season, local volunteers have been scouting the beaches at night for nests. During the early hours of the morning they return for the eggs left behind by the mature female sea turtles, which come onto shore, more frequently so during the warm season and lay their eggs, before returning to sea. Sea turtle eggs face threats from illegal poachers, wild animals and dogs. The Sayulita sea turtle hatchery volunteers ensure that the eggs are placed in safe keeping during the 50 day incubation period and released back to sea once hatched.
